TIME

Chuck puts on his headphones. He is calm as if he has done this a million times before. Snaps his fingers to check the volume of the microphone. Adjusts webcam angle. Click. Timer starts. On the GS, an image of an armored character appears while a heroic chant intro starts playing for a few minutes. He gets ready.

00:08:25

Inviting voice, on top of the music.

People arrive.

00:19:03

Pause. Decided. He looks on the CS to see how many people are watching.

Get the stream flowing.

00:10:45

Pause. He moves around the windows on the CS while taking sips for a plastic water bottle. Looks at the timer. Music starts fading away. A bit undecided.

I don’t know what I’m doing, but I think I’m going to start now.

00:11:02

Music is not hearable anymore. The illustration fades away and his face appears on the GS. Eager. He never looks directly into the webcam.

Where my boys at?

00:11:10

Looks at the CS.

How are we doing today?

00:11:14

Short pause.

Pretty nice.

00:12:16

Love to see you all.

00:12:18

Polite.

Hello.

00:12:19

Hello.

00:12:20

Eager.

Who's ready?

00:12:22

Looks at GS and starts loading the game. Excited.

This is going to be fun!

00:12:25

Right guys?

00:12:27

Looks at the SC again.

Determination, I say.

00:12:30

It’s that easy.

00:12:35

Reads comments on the SC.

Interesting.

00:12:37

Short pause as he gets the water bottle and takes a few sips.

Waking up at 11:30 on a Wednesday.

00:12:40

Satisfied but a bit ironic. Falls back into his chair.

Gamer life.

00:12:42

Checks comments again to see the reactions.

Right guys?

00:12:45

Smiles.

Way ahead of schedule!

00:12:49

Sees a notification. Reads it out loud.

Thanks random stranger for the dollar!

00:12:53

Returns to read the comments in silence.

Just for the record.

00:12:55

All good.

00:12:57

Just for the record, you know?

00:13:05

Returns to a normal seated position and checks the GS to see everything is working fine. His webcam image scales down to the bottom right of the screen while the game appears on the full screen: a first-person adventure game. Game starts. The character is walking around in a forest, sword in his right hand. He looks around, satisfied.

Seems good.

00:13:07

Seems very good!

00:13:12

Continues walking until he sees enemies approaching from a distance.

Damn it.

00:13:15

Gets ready to fight. His body is tense, face gets serious. All his attention is on the game. Concentrated. Louder.

Damn it!

00:13:20

Notification pops up.

Hang on.

00:13:23

Looks at the CS and reads the notification out loud.

Thanks random stranger for the dollar!

00:13:40

He returns to the GS. The fight begins. His face is very concentrated and serious while battling away the enemies one by one. A lot of mouse clicks can be heard in the background. The clicks diminish and the face eases up slowly as enemies are defeated. The fight ends. He can relax. The character resumes his strolling through the forest.

Saving once.

00:13:42

Saves game.

Twice.

00:13:44

To be sure.

00:13:47

Saves game again. More relaxed.

Alright.

00:13:50

His gaze moves from CS to GS a few times as he tries to read comments and to also go on with the game. Welcoming.

Morning!

00:13:52

Top of the morning to ya!

00:13:54

Notification pops up. Reads it out loud.

Thanks random stranger for the subscription.

00:13:56

Good evening!

00:13:57

Good afternoon!

00:13:59

How are we today?

00:14:03

Waits a bit then read the latest comments. Satisfied.

Good.

00:14:04

Returns to the GS.

Glad you're good.

00:14:07

I hope your day is going good.

00:14:12

Hopeful.

If it’s not, I hope it gets a bit better, alright?

00:14:15

Short pause. Eager.

Who’s ready from some war-zone?

00:14:17

Checks comments.

You ready?

00:14:18

I’m ready.

00:14:21

Returns to the GS and loads the map of the game.

It doesn’t matter if you’re not ready.

00:14:29

He chooses a point on the map and clicks on it. The screen loads.

I’m gonna run it, alright?

00:14:32

The game loads a different setting. The character arrives in a ruined village. Desolated setting post-war.

Let's walk.

00:14:40

The character inspects the place. He goes into the ruins of a building. He looks around. Finds a wooden drawer. Excited.

I wonder what’s inside.

00:14:44

Let’s try this one.

00:14:48

The character tries to open the top drawer. Slightly surprised.

Oh, it’s locked.

00:14:51

The bottom one.

00:14:57

Character tries the bottom drawer. The drawer opens but is empty. Frustrated.

Nothing here.

00:15:02

Notification pops up. Reads it out loud.

Thanks random stranger for the 5 dollars.

00:15:05

Why did I even check this?

00:15:08

Disappointed.

Why bother?

00:15:13

Short pause.

Why am I doing this?

00:15:17

Checks CS to read the latest comments.

I don’t think I’m gonna find anything that I need here to be honest.

00:15:23

He returns to the game. The character goes out of the building and sees enemies approaching. An ambush.

Oh no!

00:15:30

Surprised.

No. No. Oh no.

00:15:34

The character tries to hide in the building but the enemies follow him inside. Louder.

Noooooo!

00:15:38

Discouraged.

S**t, I am trapped.

00:15:41

Get out!

00:15:42

Get out!

00:15:43

Get out!

00:15:44

Whoa!

00:15:58

The character tries to find a new exit. He finds a back door and runs off but the enemies follow. The inevitable fight starts. Click number increase. He is concentrated. The clicks decrease and he relaxes again as the last enemy is hit with the sword.

Dang!

00:16:05

Checks CS.

How was this?

00:16:15

Returns the the GS and checks the status of the character. Experience seem to have increased. The health bar is not looking particularly good. Satisfied.

We’re getting there!

00:16:19

Short pause.

We’re getting there!

00:16:24

The character continues exploring the village. No enemies in sight.

Let’s see.

00:17:00

He loads again the game menu to look up control shortcuts. Takes some time to read the instruction. Finds one that he thinks might be useful. He returns to the game.

Super jump!

00:17:06

The character jumps very high in the air. He repeats the keyboard combination to make sure to remember it.

There.

00:17:08

Satisfied.

Ok.

00:17:11

The character continues exploring while he takes a sip of his water bottle.

How is everybody doing now?

00:17:15

Short pause, then checks CS.

I think I’ll be alright.

00:17:17

Returns to GS.

Or not.

00:17:19

Whatever.

00:17:21

Short pause. Notification pops up. Reads it out loud.

Thanks random stranger for the dollar!

00:17:25

Checks the character status again and looks at the health bar. Undecided.

I don’t like how defenseless I am.

00:17:29

Checks comments on CS.

Can I just die?

00:17:33

Short pause then returns to GS.

Cause that’s what we like to do.

00:17:36

Ironic.

We like to die...

00:17:40

Short pause. Notification pops up. Reads it out loud.

Thanks random stranger for the 10 dollars.

00:17:45

Then re-spawn.

00:17:51

Short pause. Sighs.

Second chances.

00:18:05

His face looks sad and melancholic. Long pause as the character arrives at an inn. He is getting a bit more excited and returns to a more enthusiastic face.

Saving once.

00:18:08

Saves game.

Twice.

00:18:09

To be sure.

00:18:14

Saves game again. The character open the door of the inn.

Moving forward.

00:18:20

The character sees people drinking at the tables. They don’t appear to be enemies. Simple village people.

At least something’s going on.

00:18:23

One of the villagers approaches the character.

Now we’re talking!

00:21:02

Cinematic video appears on the screen. The two characters talk for a few minutes. He takes the opportunity to sip some water again, while looking at the video. There is a quest the character has to accomplish. The video finishes and the game loads again. He is now curious.

Let’s go ahead and run this thing.

00:21:15

The character start running, away from the village in search for something.

Are you home?

00:21:19

Checks the CS for comments.

I’m home.

00:21:21

Who’s home?

00:21:23

I think everyone’s home.

00:21:27

Short pause as he returns to GS.

It’s all good.

00:21:29

Notification pops up. Reads it out loud.

Thanks random stranger for the one-month subscription!

00:21:32

Welcome back.

00:21:36

Returns to GS. Character is now walking up a mountain. Notification pops up. Reads it out loud.

Thanks random stranger for the 5 dollars!

00:21:38

We’re in a good grand place right now.

00:21:40

Ahh! Would you look at that!

00:21:45

The character finds a ripped bag with potions, coins and an old dagger. Very excited.

Ooooh!

00:21:48

It’s the good stuff!

00:21:51

It’s the good stuff!

00:22:00

He adds up the latest goods to the inventory. The character drinks the potions. His health bar is now to the fullest. He knows something is about to happen very soon. Eager. The characters runs towards the top of the mountain.

Gets you hyped up!

00:22:20

Louder. Pumped up.

Gets you all kinds of hyped up!

00:22:28

Game music starts to become more dramatic and accelerated. The character stars looking around.

Oh boy!

00:22:30

Notification pops up. Reads it out loud.

Thanks random stranger for the 2 dollars!

00:22:35

He gets tense and anxious.

I don’t like this feeling.

00:22:37

Notification pops up. Reads it out loud.

Thanks random stranger for the 10 dollars!

00:22:39

Short pause.

They’re watching and listening.

00:22:41

Saving once.

00:22:43

Saves game.

Twice.

00:22:45

Saves again.

To be sure.

00:22:47

I can feel it!

00:22:48

Do you feel it?

00:22:50

We’re getting close though.

00:22:52

We’re getting close!

00:22:53

What am I gonna do?

00:22:55

They’re watching.

00:23:02

He gets more anxious and cautious. The character movies slowly and looks around him. The tension rises with each second. He is waiting.

They’re waiting.

00:23:20

Waits for the attack to start. The enemy comes from the bushes. A big white wolf suddenly attacks. He gets startled but gets to his sense quickly. Tries to defend himself. Clicks increase for just a moment. The wolf is dead. Music returns to normal. Task completed. Short pause. He is confused and doesn’t know how to react.

Are you serious?

00:23:32

The character looks around for other enemies to jump from the surroundings. There is no danger anymore. He looks at the comments to see the reactions. Underwhelmed.

No way.

00:23:43

Long pause.

Oh whatever.

00:23:49

Disappointed. He relaxes in his chair for a moment while looking at the comments. Short pause. Slightly angry.

Don’t bother.

00:24:01

Continues reading.

Obviously.

00:24:05

Short pause.

Right?

00:24:07

He gets to the game again. Character starts descending the mountain.

I don’t even care what level I am anymore.

00:24:12

Frustrated.

Everything is getting more and more casual.

00:24:15

It really makes me wonder...

00:24:18

I don’t feel challenged anymore.

00:24:21

Complaining.

You log in and you do your daily raids and missions.

00:24:24

You do the norm, you read top donations.

00:24:29

There is nothing that keeps you playing.

00:24:31

Short pause.

You feel me?

00:24:33

So I’m thinking...

00:24:37

Checks comments on the CS.

Right?

00:24:38

Right.

00:24:40

It has to be flawless.

00:24:42

Returns to game.

60 or we’re not even talking.

00:24:45

120 with Raytracing on.

00:24:49

Then it has to be unique.

00:24:52

Complaining more. Almost whining.

I wanna see bosses.

00:24:55

I wanna see mini bosses with different abilities and mechanics.

00:24:57

I wanna go left.

00:24:59

00:25:11

The character arrives to the village. He returns to a normal voice.

Proceed.

00:25:12

Notification pops up. Reads it out loud.

Thanks random stranger for the subscription!

00:25:15

Short pause.

Saving once.

00:25:17

Saves game

Twice.

00:25:19

To be sure.

00:25:22

Saves game again. Returns to his previous stream of thoughts.

Right guys?

00:25:25

That’s a game, you know?

00:25:28

Good times.

00:25:32

The character strolls through the village without a purpose. Weary. Bored.

I’m almost dead.

00:25:34

Wait a second.

00:25:37

Returns to CS. Notifications pop up. Reads them out loud.

Thanks random stranger for the two dollars!

00:25:39

Thanks random stranger for the three months sub.

00:25:42

Short pause. Returns to game. Character strolling.

It’s common sense.

00:25:45

Comes back to CS. Reads latest comments.

I don’t know.

00:25:47

That was the first for today.

00:25:50

That was disappointing.

00:25:53

Honestly.

00:25:55

Frustrated.

Ah, it sucks!

00:25:57

Notification pops up. Reads it out loud.

Thanks random stranger for the 3 dollars!

00:26:03

Louder.

It blows, dude!

00:26:10

Short pause.

I’m done.

00:26:13

Exits game. The screen shows a list of games he has the gaming platform.

Let us take a break and we take it from there.

00:26:18

Checks latest comments.

Alright. See you guys in a bit.

Webcam shuts down. The image of the armored character reappears on the GS. Heroic music starts playing. He takes off his headphones. Stretches arms to the sky and looks around him, a bit lost. Takes a moment to close his eyes and gather his thoughts He drowns in the cushion of the chair and relaxes all the way. He opens his eyes again and scrutinizes the gaming situation in front of him. Caresses the inferior edge of the keyboard then turns his face to the computer case. He stares at it for a moment, almost hypnotized. He suddenly rotates the chair and looks at the wall behind him. He clasps his hands together on his chest while looking at the framed posters, contemplating the details in each one for a few minutes. He rotates the chair again and returns facing the desk. He get the water bottle and takes a few sips. Looks at the bottle carefully then sips a few more times again. Puts in on the desk again. He takes his phone out of his pocket then starts scrolling aimlessly for a long period of time. Sometimes he chuckles for a moment, then returns to a blank face. He puts the phone away and get ready for the second part. Snaps his fingers to check the volume of the microphone. Adjusts webcam angle again. Click. Takes the water bottle and drinks loudly. He starts talking on top of the music.

00:42:05

Gotta stay hydrated, guys!

00:42:41

Long pause while he waits for more people to return.

Happy with my bottle, gotta say.

00:42:46

Honest.

Reasonable price.

00:42:50

Music starts fading away.

Get 10% off.

00:42:54

Music stops. The image of the character fades away and the GS returns to the list of games. The webcam showing him is on the right bottom corner, as before. He gets his phone from his pocket and starts typing something.

Don’t mind me.

00:43:01

Short pause.

I’m just typing things.

00:43:05

Puts the phone away and checks the CS. Reads the latest comments. Checks the timer. He gets ready

Let’s set the tone, shall we?

00:43:08

00:43:46

Returns to GS. The game loads a menu with a lot of options for character attributes. Sliders help to choose the amount of a specific attribute you want the character to have.

00:44:52

Saves changes. The game loads.

What have we got here?

00:44:58

The game shows an isometric post-war setting. Labyrinths of corridors and rooms in a military base. Confused.

Where am I going?

00:45:03

Short pause.

This way.

00:45:10

The character moves around a long corridor.

Going up or under?

00:45:17

He finds it difficult to adjust to this new view. He tries to move the character around to get used to the space.

Can I come down from up there?

00:45:21

I think it’s better here.

00:45:24

The character goes right. The corridor becomes twisted. He finally adjusts to the isometric view.

Oh ok we’re good.

00:45:27

He sees a room at the end of the corridor.

How am I getting there?

00:45:28

Notification pops up. Reads it out loud.

Thanks random stranger for the 10 dollars.

00:45:30

It’s down there.

00:45:33

The character moves around, turning left and right. Somehow the character returns to the same position, whatever combinations of movements. He is stuck in a loop.

It’s like a corner.

00:45:40

Tries to understand how to move around. He looks at the comments for suggestions. Returns to the game. He doesn’t understand what direction should he take to arrive at the room.

There’s gotta be a better way.

00:45:42

This is weird.

00:45:46

Confused.

Anyone else?

00:45:49

Waits for other comments. Amused.

Long pause. Looks at the timer.

I’m gonna take a small break and we can get it from there.

00:46:02

It ain’t slowing no one down.

Always good to be here on the daily basis.

00:47:39

Long pause.

I’ll see you in a bit.

00:47:42

Set a reminder.

00:47:46

Same place.

00:47:48

Same me.

00:47:52

I cannot wait to continue this.

00:47:54

But I need a small break to regain my powers.
You know how it goes lately.

00:47:59

Camera loses resolution for a second.

My camera is going funny.

00:48:05

Checks comments.

Is that what is going on?

00:48:08

I can’t do anything about it.

00:48:13

You don’t even know.

00:48:15

Music stops increasing in volume.

Is that getting louder?

00:48:19

Checks comments.

It's fine.

00:48:21

I was thinking though...

00:48:25

It’s cold down here.

00:48:32

Short pause.

It’s nice for the computer.

He disappears as the GS loads a fighting scene snippet from his most viewed gameplay to date.

Chuck is preparing for the stream. He sits on a hug, bulky-looking chair in front of the desk. He puts on his headphones. He is calm as if he has done this a million times before. Snaps his fingers to check the volume of the microphone. Adjusts webcam angle. Click. Timer starts. On the GS, an image of an armored character appears while a heroic chant intro starts playing for a few minutes. He gets ready.

He does have good resolution screens already but he felt it was time to step up his game in front of the camera too. First impressions count, especially if you want people to keep on watching your channel. He put himself on a diet to put away some money. It was actually a win-win since he felt it was time for a detox after all the marathons with the gang. No powders, no energy drinks. No fuels. Just music. It can do wonders. Gets you all pumped up and ready to ride. He insisted on getting a comfortable chair this time. Premium quality. 100% vegan faux leather cover in black because he likes animals. Comfortable cold foam upholstery for back support. Superior ergonomics thanks to adjustment options. 60 mm casters supporting up to 150 kg. To up his aesthetics, he upgraded his peripherals. Tradition requires RGB lighting on both keyboard and mouse. The keyboard flaunts a detachable wrist-rest for the comfort of his lefthand. WASD and the first four number keys are adorned with silver keycaps. For the right hand, he chose a lightweight mouse with amazing tactile feedback. Minimal drag. Best yet, it boasts a 70M click durability, which means it will last him a long time. Everything worth the splurge. He toped his gaming purchases with some A2-sized World of Warcraft posters to be hanged strategically behind his new chair, along with a blue strip of LEDs for ambiance. Cozy streaming situation.

Seen from a distance, his setup is nothing less than a television control room, with one screen for the game and the other for the studio controls. Changing scenes, placing cameras in the corners, light effects, volume, alerts. Custom stickers for subscribers. All dolled up for the viewers’ pleasure. Little do they know that for this setup he needs a minimum of 16 gigabytes of RAM and he is currently on the edge.

The constant upgrades in graphic cards and game mechanics keep him busy since 2004. He still relies on eight cores without hyperthreading with an overclocked power of 5.1 ghz. He uses two for the game and the other six for streaming. All summed up, he can stream his games at 1080p and 60fps with no input lag or lag spikes, courtesy of high speed fiberoptic cables.
He remembers ghosting his high-school sweetheart because of online gaming. Then it became streaming. He maybe lost the love of his life but gain a following. That’s what good stats can get you. Views. Comments. Numbers never lie.

Hyped up music intro. Load game. He sometimes feels unmotivated. He streams only because he is committed to entertain and come up with gameplays. He suffers from inertia but then he forgets about it whenever he levels up. From zero to hero as they used to say.
